Try to look at this work and not read it: CAT. If you can’t, that’s because you know the word by sight. Fact Power is like that. If you have Fact Power you look at 3+5 and automatically think 8! You don’t have to use your fingers, a number grid or any other strategy. You just know it, just like you don’t have to sound out CAT when reading.
Why do we need Fact Power?
When you have Fact Power you can do mental math quickly and accurately. Your estimations are also more accurate. It’s much more fun to play games and solve problems when you don’t have to stop and figure out answers (just like reading is more fun when you don’t have to use decoding strategies to figure out sight words). When you have Fact Power you can use it to help figure out operations with bigger numbers. We call those “fact extensions.”
How can you get Fact Power?
Practice, practice, practice. In class, we will be completing math boxes, using slate boards, playing games and learning a variety of strategies to help us attain fact power. But, to really be successful, you will need to practice at home, too! Believe it or not, this practice can be fun! You can use a deck of cards to play some of the games we play here at school. Using your fact triangle cards or a simple deck of cards is all you need! Playing math games on some of the wonderful math sites available is another way to practice your facts. -https://sites.google.com/a/rsu35.org/mrs-bousquet-s-classroom/home/everyday-mathematics-fact-power
